From Dream to Reality: How a Laser Engraver Helped Me Start My Creative Business

Starting a creative business has always been a dream for many makers. For one user, that dream became possible with the help of a laser engraver. From early experiments to opening an Etsy shop and preparing for a craft show, her journey shows how a simple idea can grow into something meaningful.

Discovering the Possibilities of Laser Engraving

The idea of running a small business and creating products that people truly value had always been in my mind. Over the years, I explored different creative projects. Some worked well, while others needed more time and energy than I could manage after becoming a mom and homeschooling my children.

Like many creators, I found new inspiration online. I started following crafters on Facebook who used laser engraving machines to design and create their own products. Watching them transform simple materials into finished pieces made me curious.

I began researching different laser engravers, comparing features, and imagining the projects I could create in the future.

The First Step with the Longer Ray5 10W

That dream started to become real during Christmas 2024, when my husband surprised me with a Longer Ray5 10W laser engraver.

Everything changed in the fall of 2025.

I remembered the ornament design files I had purchased after getting my laser engraver. Around the same time, my family planned a volunteer trip to support people affected by Hurricane Helene.

I wanted to create something meaningful to share with others—personal gifts that showed care and thoughtfulness.

So, I brought my Ray5 back out and started learning again. I watched tutorial videos, practiced step by step, and gradually became more comfortable with the machine.

Although I am still learning, the improvement came faster than expected. During that season, I successfully held a Christmas ornament sale, opened my own Etsy shop, and signed up for my first craft show in April.

Growing a Creative Workspace

My current setup is still simple. Along with the Ray5 laser engraver, I use a honeycomb bed and air assist.

After earning profits from my ornament sales, I invested in the XY extension kit. For Christmas, my husband surprised me again with an air filtration system and a rotary attachment. We have already installed the filtration system, and he is planning to build a full enclosure in the future.

Looking back, I’m amazed at how much has changed. The projects I create today look more polished and professional than I ever expected when I first started.

What began as curiosity has grown into confidence. The laser engraver has changed the way I see my creative future and helped me discover new possibilities.

It has even become a hobby I truly enjoy. Every morning, I find myself thinking:
